Paula, Mary-Anne and Chris provided an update:

  • 8 schools and over 400 students have expressed interest in the Model UN event to be held on Oct. 24th from 8:15 am - 3:30 p.m.
  • due to the overwhelming interest and limitations posed by the venue, the sub-committee voted to have all the schools participate with a cap of 15 placed on the number of students that can attend from each school.  Therefore, approximately 120 students and faculty advisors will attend.
  • Three UN committees will be struck to discuss the militarization of space, Cuban missile crisis, and nuclear non-proliferation
  • The sub-committee is looking for members to volunteer to support the event.
  • Councillor Nisan will provide a keynote to the students.
  • The UN sub-committee will receive Chair training from a University of Toronto student who is actively involved in Model UN events.
  • A UN flag raising will be coordinated on the same day for the students to participate in.

Marybeth provided an update:

  • No new information was relayed as the Committee did not meet this month.
  • members were informed that the committee is liaising with a new contact at the Burlington Public Library.  New library programs will be arranged for the winter.
  • The official delegation travel to Itabashi, Japan to celebrate 35 years of twinning is around the corner and details are being finalized.  Hassan and Marybeth will form part of the official delegation.
  • On October 12th, Nagata Shachu (Japanese drum group) will be performing at the Burlington Performing Arts Centre.

Allan and Anne provided an update:

  • The 2025 Canada Netherlands Friendship Day event will be held on May 24th, on a different day than the Sakura Festival.  Many will be travelling to Apeldoorn early May to participate in the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands and 20 years of twinning between Apeldoorn and Burlington.  The sub-committee will look for a location now that a date has been established.
  • the 2000 tulips purchased by the committee have arrived.  They will be distributed to residents who expressed interest, committee members, council members, elementary school and high school gardens. The sub-committee will prepare a one pager of information on tulip planting to giveaway along with the bulbs. The orange tulips will bloom in the spring to align with the Paint the Town Oranje theme for the 20th anniversary year.
  • The pen pal program continues with Trinity Christian and Tom Thompson elementary schools exchanging letters with Heuvellaan school in the Netherlands.
  • MOTION to spend up to $2000 to purchase 1000 commemorative lapel pins for the 20th anniversary. carried.
  • The sub-committee continues to pursue a youth soccer linkage between Burlington and Apeldoorn for the 20th anniversary year.
  • The citizen delegation visit from Apeldoorn was a great success and fun was had by all 21 travelers over their 9 day stay in Burlington.  They enjoyed their visit and their homestays.  The sub-committee noted that the program was very full and will consider more free time in the program for future exchanges.
  • A visiting teacher from Apeldoorn met with Burlington teachers to discuss future student exchanges.
  • Apeldoorn will host Burlington residents in May of 2025.  20 billet families have been lined up. The cost of travel is approximately $3600.
  • A meeting will be held on Oct. 15th to talk about the trip to Apeldoorn in May 2025.
  • Chris, Mary-Anne, Diana and Hassan participated at the Mundialization booth. The event was well attended.
  • Members suggest coming up with different engagement tools and new swag for the next event.
  • There are many in the community that still don't know about the Mundialization committee but are interested to learn more.
  • There is an overall interest to create new marketing materials.  Members to bring ideas to the next meeting for consideration and discussion.
