Hassan welcomed the newest member Sriti to the Mundialization committee, as well as Najib who will be volunteering with the United Nations subcommittee.

On motion, Hassan Raza and Brett Huttman were elected as Chair and Vice Chair, respectively of the Burlington Mundialization Committee, effective immediately for the term to expire December 31, 2023.

Rob provided the Itabashi subcommittee update:

  • The pen pal package has arrived from Itabashi and have been delivered to M.M. Robinson
  • The Itabashi student art is on its way to Burlington for displaying at City Hall 
  • Florence Meares public school (grade 2), Frontenac public school (Kindergarten, grade 7 & 8) participating in the art exchange
  • A Haiku workshop has been coordinated with Burlington Public Library (BPL). It will be held at Central Library on Monday, April 17th from 1:30-3 p.m. This coincides with International Haiku Day.
  • Rob investigating the opportunity to have an art exchange between the Art Gallery of Burlington (AGB) and the Itabashi Art Museum. The exchange would be planned for 2024 during the 35th twinning anniversary celebrations.
  • Sakura event performers have all been confirmed.
  • Members are investigating the return of the Taste of Japan event to coincide with the Sakura event
  • Members discussed whether to spend $1900 to provide the public with a livestream of the Sakura blooming at Spencer Smith Park. This was done during COVID to allow the public to continue to view the blooms during lockdowns.  The committee agreed to not pursue a livestream this year. 
  • Leanne represented the Mundialization Committee at the Emperor of Japan's birthday celebration hosted by the Consul General of Japan in Toronto on Feb. 23.

Anne provided the Apeldoorn subcommittee update:

  • The Apeldoorn student art has not arrived. The theme of the art will match the “Friendship” theme of the Canada Netherlands Friendship Day (CNFD) event and be displayed at BPAC during the event.
  • CNFD event speakers have been confirmed.
  • The subcommittee will place an Ad in the Dutch newspaper De Krant this month to promote the CNFD event.
  • Committee discussed alternative ways to promote the CNFD and Sakura events on May 13. Lisa will connect with Communication staff to enquire about paid social ads. Subcommittee members continue to pursue opportunities through local media as well.

Chris provided the United Nations subcommittee update:

  • The high school student event held at Haber in February was a success. The speakers and content were great.  The subcommittee would like to work on increasing attendance and will engage with school UN clubs, for future events. 
  • Subcommittee members will connect with organizers of a Halton UN event to take place in May.
  • Plans are underway for a UN event in October to align with United Nations day on Oct. 24.
  • Plans are underway for a student bursary for Burlington students engaged in UN activities.  A proposal will be presented to committee members at the next meeting for discussion and approval.

Majority of members agreed to meet in person for the April Mundialization Committee meeting.  Lisa will book a city room that offers hybrid meeting functionality.
