The Chair read the Land Acknowledgement.

Marybeth provided an update:

  • the committee was pleased with the attendance (18), at the movie screening of Hula Girls and is considering coordinating another movie screening in the coming year.  The committee is also discussing the coordination of new library programs for the spring, including another sword talk.  
  • Marybeth and Rob were very impressed by the interpreter skills during the Itabashi delegation visit in June/July, and will be forwarding a letter of appreciation.
  • Pen pal letters from Itabashi have arrived. Marybeth will ensure that they get distributed to the schools.

Anne provided an update:

  • 22 Apeldoorn citizens will visit Burlington from Sept. 8 - 15th, 2024. An unveiling of the new public art wrap at Spencer Smith Park has been arranged.  The ribbon will be cut by Mayor Meed Ward and former Apeldoorn Mayor Fred DeGraaf. The citizens will visit downtown Burlington, Canadian Warplane Museum, Niagara Falls and Niagara on the Lake, Crawford Lake, RBG, St. Jacobs, and the Binbrook Fair.
  • An elementary school pen pal exchange is being organized. Miles Ross (Burlington teacher) and John Simons (Apeldoorn teacher) will visit Trinity Christian school on Sep. 13th to discuss future student exchange opportunities.
  • April 27 to May 10, 2025, a group of Burlington citizens will visit Apeldoorn. A draft itinerary is being planned.  
  • members of the Burlington Apeldoorn Committee and Apeldoorn Burlington Committee will meet next week to discuss future of the committee

Allan provided an additional update:

  • 20th Anniversary celebrations continue to be discussed for 2025. 
  • the committee will be distributing 2000 orange tulips in the community to support the theme of Paint the Town Oranje.  If anyone from the public is interested in receiving a small bag of orange tulip bulbs, they can contact city staff at clerks@burlington.ca

Paula, Mary-Anne and Chris provided an update:

  • planning for the Model UN Day for Halton high school students, is underway
  • students on the sub-committee have prepared 3 background guides to be used at the event.
  • Councillor Nisan will be the keynote speaker.
  • The subcommittee is meeting on Sept. 9th to finalize details.
  • all boardrooms on the 2nd and 3rd floors of City Hall have been booked for use by the Model UN event being held on October 24th.  The raising of the UN flag will also take place that day.
  • students have prepared a letter to send to all local MP's and MPP's requesting their attendance at the flag raising.

Chris, Diana and Mary-Anne have committed to being available to host the Mundialization Committee table at the event.  Still looking for another member to volunteer to help out.  The committee will use the Mund board game to interact with members of the public.

Lisa (Clerk) advised that citizen advisory recruitment will be launched shortly to fill vacant positions on various boards.
