Dan provided the following update:

  • RFP for Cycling Master Plan consultant closed - received five proposals.  Meeting with Procurement staff the first week of August to review. Two priorities will be 1) New Street peer review and 2) Developing cycling network (what, where, cost elements and priority plan).
  • CanBike training will take place in the Fall. Interested committee members can begin at Level 4 - need Level 5 to teach. Student to instructor ratio is 6:1.
  • Construction on downtown multi-use path - Ontario Street to Graham's Lane -scheduled to begin in September. Extending the multi-use path north of Graham's Lane will be looked at as part of Cycling Master Plan update.
  • Feasibility study will be completed on the lighting of multi-use paths as part of the Cycling Master Plan update (Centennial and hydro corridor).
  • Burlington Bike Fest will be held on Friday, August 11 at Spencer Smith Park at 9 a.m.  There will be refreshments, cycling giveaways, bike safety education, bike maintenance and a bike ride at noon to the lift bridge.
  • Report regarding New Street Pilot is scheduled to go to Committee of the Whole on October 30.
  • Brad stated that the St. Marks Fun Fair went well and advised of the following upcoming events:
    • August 7 - Joseph Brant Day @ LaSalle Park from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
    • August 11 - Burlington Bike Fest @ Spencer Smith Park at 9 a.m.
    • September 24 - Appleby Line Street Fest from 1 to 5 p.m.
    • September 30 - Doors Open Bike Tour

ACTION:  Brad to set up Sub-committee meeting in August to discuss bike route for Doors Open.

ACTION: Jo-Anne to connect with Joseph Brant Day organizers for more details and the Legal Department re: a waiver for the August 11 bike ride and September 30 Doors Open bike tour.

 

Chris provided the following update:

  • Submitted comments to staff regarding the new public pathway in downtown Burlington.
  • Advised of some spots on Dundas Street (south side of road near Millcroft Golf Course) where path is very close to the road and there is potential risk to cyclists.

ACTION: Dan to send concerns re: Dundas Street to the Region.

  • Councillor Dennison shared information about an Everesting event that happened on Kerns Road on July 22 but unfortunately had to be called off due to rain and devices not reading correct altitude.  Organizers are hoping to attempt it again next year.  Perhaps the committee can be involved somehow. Further discussion will take place at September meeting.
  • Councillor Dennison spoke to the unexpected storm sewer replacement on New Street from Guelph Line to Rossmore due to structural deterioration of the underground sewer system. Construction is expected to end by July 28. 
  • Councillor Dennison shared highlights from his bike ride around the north eastern part of Lake Michigan. 
  • James advised that he is doing some research on cycling for his Masters and will be passing out surveys at the Appleby and Fairview GO stations a couple of week day mornings in September. Asked members for assistance, if available. 
  • Discussion took place regarding the cancellation of the August 29 meeting.

     On motion, the Committee approved cancelling the August 29 meeting.
