The Chair read the Land Acknowledgement.

Hassan advised that Suzanne would no longer be the Clerk for the committee and thanked her for her assistance.  He also advised that Lisa Palermo would be the Clerk for the committee going forward and welcomed her.

  • MOTION:  Approve the 2023 Mundialization Committee work plan and budget.  CARRIED

Rob provided an update from the Itabashi subcommittee:

  • The art exchange between Burlington and Itabashi schools is being coordinated.
  • A draft 2022 sub-committee annual report will be presented at the next committee meeting.
  • The pen pal exchange between Burlington and Itabashi schools is underway.  Letters from Japan are expected to arrive soon.

Anne provided an update from the Apeldoorn subcommittee:

  • The pen pal exchange between Burlington and Apeldoorn schools is underway.  There has already been one exchange of letters and a second exchange has started.
  • Planning will commence in February for the 2025 citizen exchange to the Netherlands to partake in twinning and 80th liberation anniversary celebrations.
  • Planning is underway for the Canada Netherlands Friendship Day celebrations to be held Sat., May 13, 2023.  The speakers have been contacted.
  • The Mayor of Apeldoorn and Chief of Staff Marjan Thalen will be visiting Burlington May 12-17, 2023.  A program needs to be created for their visit. Suggestion made to arrange for the two Mayors to visit a few local schools together.
  • Anne asked members to consider joining the Apeldoorn subcommittee to assist with planning for the Canada Netherlands Friendship Day (CNFD) event and other subcommittee tasks.

Joanna and Lisa provided an update from the UN subcommittee:

  • Planning for a student workshop is underway.  The workshop will be held from 4-6 p.m. at the Haber Recreation Center.
  • The subcommittee is seeking speakers for their events and asked the committee for suggestions .  Some suggestions were provided at the meeting and everyone was encouraged to reach out to the subcommittee with further suggestions they may have. Paula Hearn and Councillor Nisan have agreed to speak.  
  • Committee members agreed to meet the 2nd Wednesday of the month for the rest of the year.  Calendar invites will be sent out to all members by the Clerk.
  • Anne asked the Clerk to reach out to city staff to see if the display case outside city hall could be booked from May 8-13, 2023, to promote the Sakura Festival and CNFD events.
