Sabrina provided the following update:

  • 176 students registered to date from Burlington, Oakville and Milton.
  • Guest speaker confirmed - Dr. Alistair D. Edgar - will speak for approximately 20 minutes followed by a Q&A facilitated by sub-committee members.
  • Need assistance from members for set up (7:45 to 8 a.m.) and for lunch (11:20 a.m.) 

Miles provided the following update:

  • Recent Apeldoorn delegation was a huge success and many thanks to Johanna and Peter for all their hard work. A summary has been completed of what went well and what could be improved upon.
    ACTION:  Rox will post a photo gallery on website with a possible link to Apeldoorn Committee's Facebook page.
  • Dutch Food & Games Night was a great success with more than 100 people in attendance. Special moment when all 19 visitors from Apeldoorn got up and sang Dutch songs.
  • People need to be recruited for the May 2018 Excursion to Apeldoorn as soon as possible. Information meetings have been scheduled for October 23 and 30 at City Hall.  Charlie has reserved 20 seats with Air Canada.
  • It is not confirmed as to whether Mayor Berends will visit Burlington in May 2018.
  • Fall art presentation "The Golden Age of Dutch Painting" by Brian Wylie on November 29 has been cancelled due to illness.  A replacement speaker is being considered.
    ACTION: Rox to indicate event cancelled on website and events calendar.
  • Thirteen grade 5 classes from six different schools will participate in the pen pal exchange this school year.
  • High school exchange is at a stand still due to a change in some  school policies which allow travel/excursions only during March Break and no other time throughout the school year. Not sure what will happen as all historical attractions/commemorations happen in April in Holland.

Chuck provided the following update:

  • Madame Butterfly  lecture, October 24, 7 - 8:30 p.m., Central Library
  • Madame Butterfly movie, October 26, 7 - 8:30 p.m., Central Library
  • Hoping to have a tea ceremony - date and location to be determined
  • Working with M.M. Robinson students regarding a pen pal exchange. Letters coming from Itabashi the end of October and letters (and poem) from M.M. students will be ready soon.
  • Sakura Festival will be held at the Art Gallery of Burlington on May 5, 2018. Hoping to book BPAC for 2019.
  • Request for Proposal (RFP) for Itabashi Garden design closes on October 20. City staff has advised that this will be included in the 2018 capital budget for consideration during budget discussions. Hope to have some sort of presentation in 2019 for the 30th anniversary.
  • Annual student art exchange between Sir Ernest MacMillan Public School and Fujimedai, Itabashi will take place in May 2018 at the AGB.
  • 30th anniversary in 2019 - awaiting response from Itabashi  to determine their view on continuing anniversary celebrations every five years rather than ten, as stated in the City's twinning framework.
  • Display at Burlington Central Library until the end of November.
  • Rob Lyng going to Itabashi and will meet with Mayor Sakamoto on November 16.
    ACTION: Clerks to work with Mayor's Office to get a letter of greeting to send with Rob.
  • Ed thanked all members for their involvement in past events and noted all were a huge success.
  • Central High School is holding a Community Cultural Carnival on December 7 from 7 to 9 p.m.
  • Committee Services is in the process of recruiting for volunteers for citizens committees.
  • Next meeting (November 1) will be the annual social gathering and will once again be held at Pepperwoods at 6 p.m.
