  • Reviewed the program for Canada Netherlands Friendship Day scheduled for May 5 at 11 a.m. and advised that volunteers are still needed. Posters are ready to distribute throughout the community and an ad is going in The Post April 26 and May 3. Hassan and Charlie will be doing an interview on April 21 at 8:30 a.m. with the Oakville radio station Dutch Touch - CJMR 13.8 - to highlight CNFD.
  • Participants for the citizen exchange will meet on April 16 with DH Tours to receive tickets, final itinerary and receive a crash course in Dutch by Johanna. Anne shared some of the activities that the delegation will be participating in and noted that Charlie will be taking the student's artwork to Apeldoorn.
  • Jo-Anne showed the video of "A Poem for Apeldoorn" by Dan Murray that will be shown on May 4 at the Mayor's reception in Apeldoorn along with a framed version of the poem being presented to Mayor Berends.
  • Other possible initiatives include replacing the Dutch Food and Games Night with Rijsttafel and a Dutch Soccer Night to promote "Canada vs Netherlands" soccer friendly games amongst children.

In Rob's absence, Karla provided the following update:

  • Reviewed the program for the Sakura Festival scheduled for May 5 at the AGB from 1 to 3 p.m. and advised that volunteers are needed to assist.
  • 30th anniversary delegation from Itabashi will likely be the end of June, beginning of July which would allow for participation in Canada Day festivities. The delegation to Itabashi would likely be October. The Itabashi Garden is being worked on and there has been a great exchange of information between Burlington and Itabashi.
  • Set up of the art from Itabashi and Sir Ernest MacMillan School will take place at the AGB on April 25 at 10:30 a.m. - volunteers welcome.  The formal opening of the "Celebration of Art" will be held on May 9 at 7 p.m.
  • Pen Pal program is done for this school year and was a huge success. Chuck and Bill are looking at revamping the program and possibly expanding it to different grades.
  • Some upcoming events include:
    • Animation Exploration - Tansley Woods - April 16 at 7 p.m.
    • Japanese Movie Night - A Tale of Samurai Cooking - Central Library - May 2 at 6:30 p.m.
  • Shared recent newspaper article regarding Mr. Enomoto's donation and Mayor Goldring's article on Burlington's relationship with Itabashi.

Sabrina provided the following update:

  • Will continue the Model UN event in October but having some difficulty finding a speaker.  Unfortunately Stephen Lewis is not available; however hoping to hear from Nancy Doubleday soon.  Suggestion was made to book speaker for 2019 sooner rather than later.
  • Will participate in a couple of events in the Spring/Summer - One Burlington Festival, Canada Day - with a booth sharing information about the UN.
  • Support from students has been great.
  • Jo-Anne reminded new committee members to submit sign-off pages from booklets that were distributed to them in January.
  • Ed advised that unfortunately two resignations have been received since the last meeting - John Coyle and Manuela Rotar.  Due to these resignations, Karla Veites is now a full voting member.
  • Johanna shared an article about a Parliamentary poet.
  • Hassan suggested that we recognize Mr. Enomoto in some way - perhaps a dedication of some kind in the Itabashi Garden.
