Brenda Agnew, Alexandra Warne, Councillor Taylor, Rosemary Minnella,  

David Taggard, Manager of Facility Assets with the City of Burlington provided an update on the Lowville Schoolhouse renovations: 

  • the project includes creating an accessible entrance to the school house as well as accessible washrooms which currently do not exist
  • the committee was shown concept drawings and was asked to comment
  • committee comments were all positive and they liked what was presented
  • Judi provided coordinator reports for July, September, October, and November to the committee prior to the meeting for review and asked if members had any questions
  • feedback regarding the accessibility of election voting locations was asked to be sent to the clerk, to be complied and forwarded to the election officer
  • currently applying for grant money to fund Mobi-Mats for Burlington Beach
  • thank you to all those that volunteered
  • this was seen a positive engagement opportunity particularly with older adults
  • 15-20 engagements
  • there was a lot of people traffic in general
  • photo fail engagement tool would work well in this environment
  • add attending the farmers market to the 2019 work plan and try to increase from two dates to four
  • behind the hotel was not a great location
  • would be willing to attend this event again in 2019, depending on the location of the booth
  • need an able-bodied volunteer before and after the event to help with set-up and tear-down
  • A report outlining the Multi-year Accessibility Plan will be going to the Committee of the Whole on January 14, 2019.
  • review of pop up patios has been added to the work plan
  • the communication for the respect the space campaign has started and includes information on the home page of the City of Burlington website, social media posts, and a hard copy handout
  • committee members asked about the possibility of promoting the respect the space campaign on private property
  • a brief discussion regarding the 2018 work plan and if any items could still be completed
  • discussion regarding what could be done for the International Day of People with Disabilities

ACTION:  Suzanne to arrange for a proclamation to be made at the council meeting on December 17

Sheila provided the following update:

  • there has not been a Seniors' Advisory Committee meeting since June 14, the committee is meeting on Monday Nov. 12
  • Seniors Day was celebrated in October
  • spoke about a program that the City of Burlington Fire Department provides to have smoke alarms tested and/or changed for anyone over the age of 65 and persons with disabilities 

No update as the next meeting is on Nov. 19, 2018.

  • Tricia spoke to the committee about membership
  • Michael Bombardier has resigned from the committee
  • members whose first terms are up in December will need to reapply if they wish to continue for a second term
  • please think about the commitment that is needed and remember how important volunteering is to the committee

ACTION:  Suzanne to connect with members who will need to reapply

Suzanne provide a demonstration on how to use the new 'Spot the Fail' engagement tool.

It was decided that the December meeting be a social holiday gathering.  There will not be a formal agenda, just time spent in the company of good people.

ACTION:  Suzanne to secure a location for the holiday social and then communicate that to the committee.
