Miles provided the following update:

  • Anne, Arnold and Charlie were thanked for organizing and leading the citizen delegation to Apeldoorn. The trip was a huge success and some photos were shared. Feedback from the debrief held on May 28 was very positive and folks were encouraged to participate in future trips.
  • 2020 is a special year - the 15th anniversary of our twinning and the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Holland. Hoping the official delegation will be able to participate in the many celebrations on May 4, 5 & 9, 2020 in Apeldoorn.  Delegation from Apeldoorn to Burlington will be September 2020. Looking to create an adhoc committee that might contact students, adults, volunteers who have been involved with the committee over the past 15 years.
  • Canada Netherlands Friendship Day on May 5 was a great success and very positive feedback was received. Consul General was quite impressed with the students and invited them to Queen's Park next year.
  • Hoping to have a Rijsttafel in November so doing a trial event on July 5 at a sub-committee member's home. All are invited to attend - 6:30 p.m. apps and 7:30 p.m. dinner. Tickets $35.

Rob provided the following update:

  • Sakura Festival on May 5 was very well attended and received very positive feedback. Art Gallery of Burlington is booked for next year's event.
  • 30th anniversary delegation from Itabashi will be June 30 to July 3 so they can participate in Canada Day festivities. The delegation to Itabashi will be October 16-27 and DH Tours is working on a draft itinerary.
  • The Koyanagi ceramics collection is currently on display at the Art Gallery of Burlington.
  • Celebration of Art event on May 9 went well but unfortunately was only attended by half of the students who participated. Robert Steven, Executive Director of the AGB, gave a good speech on the importance of art.
  • M.M. Robinson is very interested in continuing the Pen Pal Program. Still looking for other schools who are interested and Bill will follow up with Central High School to seek interest.
  • Movie night at Central Library on May 2 was well attended.
  • Rotary Club of Burlington Lakeshore will present the Kan Nakazawa International Studies Award on June 12 to Noah Godin.

Sabrina provided the following update:

  • Gearing up for the Canada Day event and shared design work for the banners created by graphics staff. Hoping to use a trivia wheel and asked about swag for prizes and the use of a tent.
    Action:  Jo-Anne to advise of committee swag and the options for a tent.
    Motion: Approve a budget of up to $1,000 to cover supplies and expenses for participation at Canada Day and the One Burlington Festival. 
  • Working on October UN Day event and looking to have students pre-register.  Information is being sent out to schools. Rory will participate on the panel.
  • Ed advised with regret that he had received Eric Lim's resignation from the committee because of opportunities to study abroad.  The committee thanked him for his active participation and wished him well in all his future endeavors.
  • Rob asked about the RFP for the City's gift to Itabashi, Japanese business cards and lapel pins.
    Action: Jo-Anne to look into and provide information at next meeting.
  • Rob asked about meeting with Roads, Parks & Forestry staff regarding the cherry trees at Spencer Smith Park.
    Action: Jo-Anne to follow-up with staff.
