Ed welcomed the new members to the committee and commenced roundtable introductions.

Jo-Anne provided the members with an orientation including an overview of committee structure, terms of reference, roles, policies and procedures. New members received the Citizen Committee Handbook and the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) Training Program - Modules 1 and 2 to read, sign the back page and return at next meeting.

Miles provided a brief history of our twinning relationship with Apeldoorn and the importance of Canadians to the Dutch culture.

Miles provided the following update:

  • The Cultural Festival held at Central High School on December 7 was well attended.
  • The response for the Citizen Exchange to Apeldoorn (Apr 30 to May 10) has been overwhelming due to the ads  placed in The Post and Charles' interview on Cogeco.  There is now a waiting list.
  • The five elementary schools who participate in the grade 5 pen pal program will have a Burlington/Apeldoorn art display at City Hall during Canada Netherlands Friendship Day on May 5.
  • Trying to get more information from the school board related to student exchanges and will be meeting with Councillor Lancaster for assistance.
  • David Knapp is leading Canada Netherlands Friendship Day on May 5. Alexander Public School band will be playing.
  • Dan Murray, Poet, will be attending January 31 meeting.
  • Unsure if Mayor Berends is coming in May.

Rob provided a brief history of our twinning relationship with Itabashi.

Rob provided the following update:

  • 2019 marks the 30th anniversary so there will be lots of work this year to prepare for that. There will be an official delegation in Itabashi and Burlington.
  • Twinning agreement report to maintain 5 year anniversary celebrations was approved by Council on December 11.
  • Budget was approved by Council on December 11 for the Itabashi Garden at Tansley Woods. Goal is to have it completed by 2019.
  • Mr. Enomoto's donation arrived in December. Decision needs to be made on what charity to donate it to.  An event will be planned for the cheque presentation.
  • Ikebana traditional Japanese flower arranging workshop at Central Library scheduled for January 16 is sold out.
  • Japanese movie night will be held on May 2 at Central Library during Asian Heritage Week.
  • Sakura Festival is planned for May 5 at the Art Gallery.
  • Student art exchange will take place in May 2018 with Sir Ernest MacMillan Public School and Fujimedai, Itabashi.
  • Second set of letters for the pen pal program were received last week and delivered to M.M. Robinson.

In Sabrina's absence, Ed advised that the subcommittee is gearing up for UN Day in October and discussing possible speakers.  There is a possibility of having some type of an event in the Spring.

  • Ed asked the Chairs of the Subcommittees to begin working on their 2017 annual reports so they can go to Council in April or May.
