On motion, Jon Millman was elected as Chair to the Burlington Cycling Advisory Committee for the term to expire December 31, 2023.

Dan provided the following updates to the committee:

  • invited to the Burlington Youth Student Council on Wednesday May 10 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Burlington Seniors Centre to speak about cycling, any interest to attend please let Dan know, this will be about a half hour time commitment
  • Saturday was Earth Day, city staff did not attend the event however cycling give aways were at the event at Beachway Park
  • 2 bike racks and repair stations have been delivered to the pumphouse at Beachway Park, they will be installed in the parking lot, not paving over grass for installation, will let the committee know when they have been installed
  • Bike to Work Day would not be successful this year due to the lack of staff working at City Hall due to the construction
  • work continues on protected bike lanes, once completed we should plan a cycling party to promote the new infrastructure
  • Dundas Street road widening to 6 lanes is completed in Oakville and is now moving into Burlington, when meeting with Halton Region staff Dan proposed protected bike lanes be included in the scope of the project, Councillor Nisan has meet with Halton Region staff as well and felt the Region is taking a pretty hard stand on proving on road bike lanes that are not protected.  Dan to share a drawing of what is proposed by the Region for Dundas Street

Councillor Nisan advised the committee that the Region of Halton is currently working on a Transportation Master Plan, the Region recognizes that the way they have been doing roads is not up to 2023 standards, they know the current way of planning roads is not what people want anymore.

Jon provided the committee with the following updates:

  • staff are currently doing a review of the demand on Downtown parking facilities, looking at analyzing existing and future parking demands in the Downtown, can cycling be promoted to reduce the parking demand?
  • it was suggested that staff be invited to attend a future ITAC meeting to provide information on the Major Transit Area Station Areas (MTSA)
  • staff are working to increase Transit services to meet pre-pandemic levels, changes coming in September 2023
  • free Transit for students coming this summer

The committee discussed what activities could be done during June is Bike Month.

The committee is participating at the Moon in June road race with give away and providing cycling information.

Laura shared her idea to have an event template to help committee members when attending events to be providing consistent information.

Ward rides were discussed, was it best to involve community members or just invite Councillors as a way to inform on the pro's and con's of cycling in each ward.  Suzanne and Jon to touch base regarding ward rides and how to move forward with this initiative.

The committee discussed if Bike Rodeos could be incorporated at events that the committee is attending?  This could be a way to make attending events more interactive.  Could this be done at the Appleby Line Street Festival?

Chair adjourned the meeting at 8:18 p.m.
