Visited7.1Communications (committee marketing, publicity, etc.)

Meeting attended by Jeevan Brar, Social Media Advisor. Mundialization members expressed frustration with the communication processes required to market/publicize events and with the limitations placed on committees with respect to directly connecting with the public via social media. Jeevan agreed to work with members to promote Mundialization events​ on social media effectively and timely. Mund members agreed to coordinate a 'task force' to come together and make recommendations on improving and streamlining communications between the committee and city staff. The following members volunteered to participate on the 'task force': Hassan, Rory, John, Jennifer and Sabrina. Lisa to arrange a meeting with a few members of the task force and communciations staff. Members urged communication staff to consider all audiences when publizing events.

Visited7.2Apeldoorn subcommittee update

21 High school students from Bateman, Nelson, Pearson and Hayden, along with 3 teachers are leaving for Apeldoorn on April 7, returning April 17.

Final arrangements are being made for Canada Netherlands Friendship Day being held on Saturday, May 6 from 11 am - noon.

MOTION: to spend up to $2000 for chairs, refreshments, sound system, printing, etc for the coordination and delivery of the CNFD event. Carried.

Ed will attend Apeldoorn's CanadaFest on May 7, 2017 to represent the Mundialization Committee. Ed will set up a Burlington, Canada table with a Canadian themed raffle prize, tourism brochures and Canada 150 giveaways.

Final arrangements are being made for the Apeldoorn citizen exchange to Burlington from September 14 to 24, 2017. 17 citizens are confirmed to visit Burlington at this time. Apeldoorn citizens will be provided with homestays while in the city.

Johanna and Ed met with a local poet to investigate the opportunity to provide the City of Apeldoorn with a poem to reciprocate the poem they commissioned and gifted to the City of Burlington in 2016. Members requested a sample of the poet's work and more information re: what the poem theme will be? Should it be written or spoken word? when should it be presented? The committee will discuss this further at a future meeting.

Visited7.3Itabashi subcommittee update

The subcommittee continues to create programming that will expose Japanese culture to Burlingtonians:

  • Haiku presentation at the Art Gallery of Burlington in partnership with the Burlington Public Library - April 25
  • Ikebana seminar at the Burlington Public Library
  • Movie and lecture - Madame Butterfly - October

St Elizabeth Seton elementary school, Burlington and Fujimidai elementary school, Itabashi are currently participating in an art exchange. All the students art will be on display at the Art Gallery of Burlington during the month of May.

Mr. Enomoto's annual donation was presented to ROCK early February. The money will go directly into programming for ROCK's community care centres. ROCK sent Mr. Enomoto a thank you gift for his generosity.

Final arrangements are being made for the Sakura Festival to be held at the ARt Gallery of Burlington on May 6, 2017.

Chuck met with a Burlington citizen that will be travelling to Japan later this year. Chuck provided the citizen with information and offered to connect with the City of Itabashi if they visit Itabashi during their travels.

Chuck acknowledged Jim Koyanagi who passed away earlier this year. Mr. Koyonagi was instrumental in initiating the twinning relationship between Burlington and Itabashi.

Visited7.4United Nations subcommittee update

The UN subcommittee has welcomed new volunteers - students from Central, Bateman and Hayden. The subcommittee is seeking at least one student from each highschool to participate on the committee, the planning of the UN events and to act as ambassadors in their highschool.

The next UN event will be held on October 24th. This will be a primarily Burlington student event but students from the Halton Region will be invited to participate. The event will be a preparatory Model UN event.

Hassan, Jen and Sabrina attended the Halton Model UN event in March to gather information and engage with students.

Mund members were encouraged to provide suggestions for a speaker for the October event. The subcommittee is looking for a speaker on international issues.

Subcommittee members continue to discuss new ways to celebrate the UN throughout the year. The subcommittee is considering a refugee day for 2018.
