Michelle provided information regarding the city's engagement charter/plan, engagement team and engagement tools.  Michelle provided a brief timeline including the 2010 Shape Burlington report, 2013 adoption of the Engagement Charter, IAP2 training, 2014 creation of Charter Action Team (CHAT) and action plan and the 2018 launch of the new online engagement platform.  Michelle outlined the features of the online engagement platform, the role of the Chat Team and provided samples of the engagement tools available.

The advocacy subcommittee will be focusing the 2019 work plan on transportation, mobility,  and social inclusion. Detailed draft work plan attached.

The communications subcommittee will be focusing the 2019 work plan on the following initiatives;

  • providing BSAC with a visual presence in the community.  The pilot for the display will be the Burlington Seniors' Centre.
  • gathering input from the community on a variety of topics such as active aging, housing and transportation.
  • increasing their exposure and existence to city staff by creating an introductory letter and providing it to all city departments. 
  • writing articles for local newsletters, Burlington Post, etc.

April provided an update on the communication subcommittee workplan. 

The subcommittee has arranged for the Seniors of Canada photo display at Burlington Mall in June, and will arrange for a BSAC display at the Burlington Performing Arts Centre during the Burlington Footnotes performances.

Carol, Alexandra and Wendy will join the communication subcommittee.

Sheila provided an update on the draft advocacy workplan. David agreed to join the advocacy subcommittee.

The subcommittee will arrange to meet with marketing staff at Burlington Transit to learn about the public engagement planned for the new free transit for seniors and to see how BSAC may assist.

Mandy reviewed the draft Active Aging webpage with members and requested their feedback.  Members comments included:

  • suggestion that each page provide an opportunity for public comment
  • will site have ability to track visitors
  • consider an online chat
  • consider an App on cell phones for wider access by residents
  • relayed concerns about searchability of information, want residents to be able to narrow searches for seniors' related topics.

The focus of the group currently is healthcare. A forum was held recently on national pharmacare and plans are being made for a town hall on healthcare.

Seniors' programming completed and available online or via the Library Guide.  Topics include; fit after fifty and financial fraud

The April meeting was rescheduled for Apr. 16. Wendy will provide a report at the next BSAC meeting.

The Inclusivity committee is in the process of developing their work plan for the year.  More detail to come.

BAAC is working on standardization of bus shelters and are providing feedback on new pickle ball courts to be installed at Tansley Woods park.

Jim will join attend quarterly to provide updates from OAAC.
