On motion, the minutes from the meeting held May 18, 2021 were approved as presented.

Georgie advised that the Cycling Committee's 2021 workplan and budget were approved at the June 7 Corporate Services, Strategy, Risk and Accountability Committee meeting. Chris was in attendance at the June 7 meeting in the event there were questions from members of Council and there were no questions regarding the Cycling Committee's workplan.

Dan provided the following updates:

  • Public Information Centre reminder for Wednesday, June 23 at 6:30 p.m. for the first protected cycling facilities in Burlington.
  • There are many unprotected bike lanes in Burlington that could be retrofitted to add plastic bollards. Met with vendor that supplies plastic bollards and would like to purchase bollards to install for protected bike lanes. The committee will be involved in selecting locations.
  • Teamed up with Cycle Toronto for Bike Month to offer nine cycling webinars throughout the month of June. Also teamed up with Burlington Public Library and Tourism Burlington to give away bike lights and bells. Based on the feedback, there was a high interest for the lights and bells.
  • Bike racks are still available for churches and businesses. Committee members to email Dan if there are organizations that could use a bike rack or have the business contact Dan directly.
  • The cycling map is still being finalized with a target of July for completion.

Greg shared that there are a lot of cyclists on ITAC interested in the Public Information Centre for the protected cycling facilities on Plains Road. The committee also discussed the future of Brant Street.

Nancy has been involved with Bill 282 and implications related to ebikes and cargo bikes with a vested interest due to her involvement in Cycling Without Age. The responsibility lies with municipalities to pass by-laws to allow these bikes. Vicki has been working on this with Nancy and they would like Burlington to pass a by-law to allow the cargo bikes used by Cycling Without Age.

Dan shared that Burlington has a by-law that states ebikes are not allowed in parks, on sidewalks and on multi-use trails. Burlington isn't having a lot of problems with ebikes at this time.

It will be important to find out what Hamilton, Milton, Oakville and other surrounding municipalities are doing for consistency between municipalities that border Burlington.

ACTION:

  • Nancy and Vicki will work offline with Dan on this matter. Claudia, Greg, and Jon are interested in assisting. If other members are interested in assisting, please email Nancy.

Chair adjourned the meeting at 7:40 p.m.
